Rocky climbs, flowy downhills, and big hops await mountain bikers on the trails of Placitas, NM. Situated in the Cibola National Forest, this trail system traverses a landscape highlighted by vibrant red and chalky white soils, bright green junipers, and, when in season, colorful blooms on a variety of cacti.
There are trails here for all skill levels and terrain preferences: sandy, compact, rocky, smooth, climby, and rollercoastery downhill fun. If you want to experience a little bit of all that, I recommend the Figure 8 Mile Olio route, available on MTB Project.
This is one of my favorite local places to ride, but the trailhead is currently closed for obvious reasons related to COVID-19. So, I put together a video of clips from the last time Ryan and I took a cruise over there. If you’re feeling a little cooped up indoors these days, I hope the views in this video evoke a sense of fresh air!
